Join us for a free movie screening followed by a live, online panel discussion of the film and how it relates to the ongoing social injustices in the US.

Discuss Hawai‘i’s racial issues - including the Black Lives Matter movement - and ally-building strategies to support of racial equality in our community. Speaker panel to include:

  • Jon Osaki:  the award-winning filmmaker and visionary of Alternative Facts
  • Camille Nelson:  the new Dean of the William S. Richardson School of Law and a leading scholar on critical race theory
  • Avi Soifer:  the immediate past Dean of the William S. Richardson School of Law and a constitutional law expert

"And Then They Came For Us" Movie & Talk Story

Join us for an afternoon of learning as we watch "And Then They Came for Us," the recipient film of the American Bar Association's 2018 Silver Gavel Award. Following the film, we will discuss the forced incarceration of individuals of Japanese ancestry on the mainland and Hawaii's experience in the fight against surpassing rights of native ancestry. Speaker panel to feature:

  • Abby Ginzberg, film co-director and producer
  • Eric K. Yamamoto, Law Professor - University of Hawaii
  • John Okutani, Hawaii Internment Team Volunteer, Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii
